Improving equality in college admissions as a result of the cutting of sports teams

As shown in the image above, athletes are many times given the ability to jump the gap from high school to college easier than equally qualified applicants. By succeeding in their sport, colleges allow athletes to overcome their lower academic credentials and have a higher chance of admission than non-athlete students.

Many colleges are currently cutting sports teams and athletic programs due to the coronavirus, meaning that this advantage given to athletes is diminishing, and more equality in college admissions is being established for this upcoming application cycle.

Though the sports colleges are cutting do not include widely accessible ones for all students, such as football, basketball, and soccer, they do involve sports that require expensive training outside of school. These include equestrian sports, fencing, rowing, golf, skiing, and sailing, which privilege primarily white, affluent students who can access and afford training. This issue increases systemic racism, as many Black and Latino applicants who were unable to afford private schools or training would be at a disadvantage for college admission. However, these cuts reduce college preferences for these athletes and improve the equality for all students in the college application process.

As sports have become a less significant factor for admission, it is time to work on other parts of your application. We are here to help! Contact us to work on your essays, resume, and more to make yourself stand out.
